Driving safely on snow and ice-covered roads

On Behalf of | Feb 7, 2024 | Car Accidents

Coloradoan residents know how unpredictable and extreme winter weather can be here. During the winter months, the weather can go from calm to nearly white-out conditions in a matter of minutes. Winter weather causes thousands of car accidents every year, so it is vitally important for motorists to know how to drive on snow and ice-covered roadways. Here are some driving techniques to keep in mind when winter weather hits.

One at a time

Driving requires acceleration, braking and turning. However, when driving on snow and ice, only do one of these at a time. Simultaneously braking and turning or accelerating and turning can cause skids, slides and spinouts.

Increase space

When the road is snow or ice-covered, it will take a vehicle much longer to stop or turn. When following another vehicle, increase the following distance to at least five to six seconds. This extra space will help avoid an accident should a stop be needed.

Slow down

The best way to avoid an accident in winter weather is to slow down. Most crashes in icy and snowy conditions happen because drivers are going too fast. Slow down and allow extra time to reach the destination. Also, never use cruise control during slick conditions.

What to do after an accident

During adverse weather conditions, an accident can happen in the blink of an eye. Regardless of road conditions, not all drivers practice safe driving habits behind the wheel. Those in Colorado who have suffered injuries in car accidents caused by the negligence of another party could benefit by speaking with a personal injury attorney about their options for legal recourse. A successful lawsuit could result in much-needed financial relief.
