Walking and running are popular forms of transportation and recreation for thousands of Colorado residents, especially during the warmer months of the year. They are great ways to save money and are also wonderful ways to reduce stress and increase fitness. However, traveling by foot near roadways can be very dangerous. When pedestrians and vehicles share the same areas, accidents are bound to happen.
Fatal pedestrian accident
Recently, a man was fatally struck by a vehicle as he was walking his dog in a subdivision in Loma. The accident happened just before 6 a.m. on Valle Alto Road. According to police reports, the man was attempting to cross the street in a crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle.
Authorities said the man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Apparently, the neighborhood is a popular spot for joggers, pedestrians and dog-walkers. Although police said the incident occurred in a crosswalk, the city reportedly removed several crosswalks in the area. Residents claim this incident was a direct result of the crosswalk removals.
Help in the aftermath of a fatal accident
Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents occur frequently in Colorado. Since pedestrians are completely exposed, pedestrians versus motor vehicle accidents are more likely to be fatal. Those who have suffered the loss of a loved one due to the negligence of another party can get help by speaking with an experienced attorney. A successful wrongful death claim could result in the surviving immediate family members receiving deserved compensation to help pay end-of-life expenses.
