Car accidents: Driver in fatal hit-and-run sentenced to 18 years

It is probably safe to say that most Colorado drivers, if they became involved in a motor vehicle accident, would remain at the scene to take responsibility for their part, assist investigators and perhaps even offer help to others involved who may have been injured. In doing so, people show they are caring and compassionate and willing to be held accountable for their actions. However, not everyone reacts in such a way following a crash, and unfortunately, car accidents can bring out the worst in some people.

Recently, a man from a different state was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his part in a fatal Colorado crash that happened in July, 2019. Reportedly, the man had been driving his vehicle early one morning on a roadway outside of Parker when he hit a bicycle from behind. He then fled the accident scene. Sadly, the 64-year-old bicyclist that had been hit died one day later.

The day after the crash, police found the vehicle abandoned in Parker and traced the car to its registered owner, which led them to the driver responsible. The driver was arrested in his home state one week later. He was later charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, vehicular homicide – reckless driving, and careless driving – vulnerable road user. According to the DA's office, earlier this year, the man had pleaded guilty to all three charges.

Fatal car accidents like this one can be especially difficult for people to understand and accept. Colorado residents may wonder if the victim's life could have been saved had the driver remained at the scene after hitting the cyclist. The driver is now paying a high price for his part in this man's untimely death. Many times, families who have lost a loved one due to another person's reckless and/or negligent actions exercise their right to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit, separate from any criminal charges brought against the person responsible.
