All Colorado residents holding a valid driver’s licence should know the responsibility that comes with such a document. Drivers must always remember they are in charge of a large piece of machinery that, if not properly controlled, could seriously injure or kill a person. Safe operation of a motor vehicle means drivers should not only follow all the rules of the road, but also maintain focus on the task of driving during their entire time behind the wheel. Car accidents can occur in a split second, and even a few moments of inattention can result in tragedy. Unfortunately, this may have been what happened when a woman was killed in a crash west of La Junta.
The single-vehicle crash happened early on a recent Thursday morning. According to the Colorado State Patrol, a 26-year-old woman was traveling west on Highway 10 when she lost control of her vehicle. The car ran off the road and rolled. The car’s front seat passenger, a 22-year-old woman who, reportedly, was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. Unfortunately, she died at the crash site.
Reportedly, two children in the back seat of the car suffered minor injuries. The driver suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital. Police have said she will face charges of careless driving causing death. They are investigating the cause of the incident, but as of yet do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were factors.
Sadly, a Colorado woman has died, and no doubt her family is enduring one of the most difficult times of their lives. Their grief is likely compounded by the fact that their loss seems to be a direct result of this driver’s negligence. Car accidents like this one often leave a victim’s surviving family facing various unexpected expenses in addition to struggling with the sudden loss of their loved one. Many people who suddenly find themselves in this type of situation choose to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney to discuss their legal options, including the possibility of a wrongful death lawsuit.
