Car accidents: Fatal crash claims life

Patricia M. Jarzobski

Police are still in the process of investigating a fatal crash that left one person dead and another in the hospital, according to local sources. The Colorado State Patrol closed the westbound lanes of Highway 50 to facilitate their investigation. Car accidents causing fatalities are taken very seriously by the state, and criminal charges may still be forthcoming.

Very little information was available about the specifics of the accident, but it has been confirmed that around 3:52 p.m. on the afternoon of Feb. 26, a collision between two vehicles occurred. Authorities arrived on the scene and closed off the area around 4 p.m., keeping the road blocked until 6:40 p.m. It was also confirmed that one person on the scene was pronounced dead.

Another person was injured and taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries. It is not known whether anyone else was involved in the crash, or if the two individuals identified by police were the drivers of their respective vehicles. Police held off releasing any information identifying these individuals to the public, pending notification of next of kin.

Car accidents with no clear cause are always carefully investigated by Colorado authorities to ensure there is an accurate accounting of the incident. If it turns out one or both drivers violated, charges could be filed against them. Additionally, any driver deemed to have been negligent in a manner that cause or materially contributed to the accident could be subject to a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit in civil court. If the driver responsible for the crash is killed in the same crash, the claim can be filed against his or her estate instead.
