Car accidents: 1 dead, 1 injured in Colorado

Patricia M. Jarzobski

Police in Denver have shut down a stretch of Interstate 225 in order to investigate a serious accident that has claimed one life, according to local sources. Colorado State Patrol moved to close the highway after a rollover crash involving one vehicle. A second person was apparently involved in the crash as well. As with most car accidents causing fatalities, this one is still under investigation.

According to the very limited information in the report, it appears that police responded to the scene of a single-vehicle accident on the evening of March 16. Around 7:26 p.m., the driver of a pickup truck apparently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over. The driver was transporting a single passenger, though neither individual has been identified, pending notification of next-of-kin.

One of the two individuals in the car was killed in the crash while the second was rushed to a local hospital with injuries, the specifics of which have not been made public. Police are currently unsure as to why the vehicle went out of control. They have not publicly commented on possible causes, suggesting they have not ruled out recklessness, negligence or intoxication as potential factors in this accident.

If Colorado State Police determine the driver was in some way responsible for the accident, that individual could face criminal charges. Even if no charges are filed, or if the driver was killed in the accident, legal recourse exists for victims of car accidents. State law allows the victims or their families to file wrongful death and/or personal injury lawsuits against any driver (or their estate) proved to be materially responsible for the crash.
