Car accidents: Driver accused of causing crash faces charges

Patricia M. Jarzobski

A man is facing misdemeanor charges following a car accident police say he caused back in October. The 24-year-old Colorado resident is accused of causing a fatal crash on Colorado Highway 6 on Oct. 3. A total of seven people were involved in the accident. However, as with many car accidents, a cause for this crash has yet to be fully determined, and police are still speaking with witnesses to determine the cause.

According to the report, it appears the 24-year-old man was transporting two individuals in his truck when the accident occurred. Summit Fire personnel responded to the accident, which happened around 6:50 a.m. and involved two vehicles -- the driver's pickup truck and a second pickup coming the opposite way. Police say it appears the man's truck crossed the median into the westbound lanes, precipitating the head-on collision.

The force of the impact totalled both trucks and killed the driver of the other vehicle outright. A passenger in the second vehicle was rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead as well. The rest of the involved individuals were all injured to varying degrees. Police say alcohol and drugs are not being considered factors in the accident, but they suspect that the surviving driver may have been speeding.

The man now faces careless driving charges, including careless driving causing death and injury. Careless driving causing death is punishable by up to a year in jail, and injury carries a 90-day sentence. The man will appear in court in February to face these charges in a Colorado criminal court. Separately, the families of the deceased as well as all injured parties involved in car accidents are entitled under state law to file additional wrongful death and/or personal injury lawsuits in civil court.
