Car accidents: 2 injured in Colorado

Patricia M. Jarzobski

Two people have been injured in a serious car accident that police believe may have been predicated by drunk driving, according to local sources. Colorado authorities responded to the crash that took place the evening of Jan. 7. As with a troubling number of car accidents, police believe both speed and alcohol could have been contributing factors to the crash, but for the moment, no charges have been filed.

According to the accident report, around 5:20 p.m. police responded to a crash on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs. It appears a vehicle was traveling southbound when a northbound vehicle attempted to negotiate a left-hand turn. As a result, the southbound vehicle struck the northbound vehicle, causing major damage to both cars.

Colorado Springs firefighters arrived on scene to extricate both drivers from their respective cars. Thankfully, no passengers were involved in the crash. The two drivers, neither of whom have been publicly identified by police at this time, were both taken to local hospitals with injuries described as serious. No other details were available as of this report, and police shut down the intersection for some five hours to facilitate their investigation.

Car accidents causing injuries are typically based upon the negligence of at least one driver. In this case, it appears that one or both drivers may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. If this is the case, criminal charges related to the crash could be forthcoming. It is possible that one or even both drivers may have grounds to file a personal injury lawsuit in a Colorado civil court. Such a claim would be handled separately from any criminal charges, though any criminal convictions secured may go a long ways toward resolving any related civil claims for monetary relief.
