Car accidents: 1 badly hurt in drunk driving crash

Patricia M. Jarzobski

One woman is in custody and another person is seriously hurt after a car accident in Colorado Springs. Authorities responded to the crash in the west downtown of the Colorado city late on the night of Jan. 25. Police believe that as with many car accidents, the driver in this incident may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. She is facing serious charges and could face jail time if she is convicted.

According to the report, around 9 p.m. during the night of Jan. 25, a 51-year-old woman was driving eastbound on West Colorado Avenue at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred. It appears she lost control of the vehicle, which spun across the road before striking a curb and two parked cars. The parked vehicles were thankfully unoccupied at the time of the impact.

However, the woman was transporting one passenger, whose identity was not initially reported by police. That individual suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition. The driver was arrested and charged with a variety of infractions, including vehicular assault and DUI. Police shut the roadway down for some six hours to facilitate their investigation.

Car accidents predicated on drunk driving are taken very seriously by Colorado authorities. The driver will be subjected to a criminal trial to determine whether she is indeed guilty of the crimes of which she has been accused. Even if she is not convicted in a Colorado criminal court, her passenger is entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver in civil court.
