Car accidents: 1 hurt in hit and run

An individual whose identity was initially withheld has been badly hurt following what police are calling a hit-and-run accident in Colorado Springs. Police responded to the crash, which occurred in the early morning of Nov. 28. The driver has since been taken into custody, but as with most car accidents of this type, the investigation is ongoing.

According to the preliminary investigation, it appears a pedestrian was attempting to cross Oro Blanco Drive around 2 a.m. when a southbound vehicle struck this person. The individual, whose identity has not been released to the public, was reportedly badly injured and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Thankfully, the individual is expected to survive.

The driver involved in the crash, a 52-year-old man, reportedly fled the scene on foot. Police later located and arrested him, and he now stands charged with hit and run. At last report, he was being held in police custody in El Paso County Jail in lieu of $30,000 bail. This is not the man's first traffic offense, as he pleaded guilty back in 2016 for permitting an unauthorized driver, as well as to a failure to display proof of insurance charge in January.

Leaving the scene of Colorado car accidents, regardless whether someone was injured or not, is considered at the very least a misdemeanor. If someone is injured, as was the case here, it is considered a felony. If the man is found guilty, he could face up to 12 years in prison. The injured party is also entitled under state law to file a separate personal injury lawsuit against him in civil court.
