Car accidents: 2 dead in Colorado

Patricia M. Jarzobski

Montrose County was the site of tragedy on Oct. 13 when a single-car crash claimed two lives. A man and a woman, one a Colorado resident and the other from out of state, were both killed when their vehicle crashed off Transfer Road. Police are still unsure what caused the crash, but as with many car accidents, this one is still under investigation.

According to the limited information provided by the report, a vehicle with a 66-year-old male occupant and a 65-year-old female passenger from Texas was traveling near Transfer Road around 10:47 a.m. For reasons that have not yet been articulated, the vehicle crashed, causing both occupants to be ejected. They were both pronounced dead of their injuries on site.

The Montrose Coroner's Office is working in tandem with the Colorado State Patrol to determine what happened to cause the crash. Autopsies will be performed on both individuals to determine cause of death and also whether intoxication or a medical condition may have contributed to the accident. These results are still pending as of this report, and the families have been contacted by authorities.

Car accidents causing a loss of life are always tragic, especially if they are preventable. Colorado law allows the family of the deceased passenger to file a wrongful death suit against the driver in civil court. Such a suit has a higher chance of being won if evidence is presented to prove the material contribution of the driver to the accident -- for example, if the driver was drunk or driving recklessly at the time of the accident. This material is made available to the family's legal representation.
