Car accidents: Man arrested in hit-and-run

Patricia M. Jarzobski

A fatal crash in Denver has led to an arrest, according to local sources. Colorado police apprehended a 25-year-old man following what is believed to be a hit-and-run crash that killed one person and injured several others. Fatal car accidents of this type are always carefully investigated by law enforcement to ensure all pertinent facts are available both to prosecutors and to criminal defense attorneys present for the trial.

According to the report, it appears around 2:15 a.m. the morning of Sept. 14, a 29-year-old woman was negotiating a left turn on a solid green light in Denver. A vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man was reportedly traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it entered the intersection and struck the woman's car. She was killed in the impact.

A passenger in her vehicle, as well as two female passengers in the other car, were also seriously injured and rushed to local hospitals. The 25-year-old driver apparently fled the scene on foot, but one of his passengers identified him to police using a Facebook picture. Officers tracked him down and arrested him, and he now stands charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death and serious injury.

If Colorado authorities prove conclusively that the man was driving recklessly, leading materially to the crash, he could face jail time and the loss of his license. Separately, as with many car accidents causing death or injury, the family of the deceased woman and the other injured parties are all entitled to file for wrongful death and/or personal injury against him in a civil court. Any evidence police collect that point to his culpability in the accident can be used to support the civil claims.
