Car accidents: 1 dead, 2 injured in Colorado Springs

One person has died in a serious auto collision at the Cimarron interchange, according to local police. Authorities in Colorado Springs have also confirmed that two other people were injured in the accident, which closed down the lanes below Interstate 25 for over eight hours. As with many fatal car accidents, the identity of the deceased individual is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, and police have not filed charges.

According to the limited information available in the report, the driver of a pickup truck was headed westbound on Cimarron when it allegedly ran a red light before striking another SUV pulling a camper. The force of the impact killed the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in the SUV were injured and rushed to local hospitals. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Police say it appears that excessive speed on the part of the pickup truck driver may have been a contributing factor in the accident. They have also not dismissed the possibility that intoxication may have been a factor as well, but they have not publicly confirmed this suspicion. It does not appear that anyone else was hurt in the crash.

Car accidents causing death are always carefully investigated by Colorado authorities. In this case, if it becomes clear the deceased driver was materially responsible for the crash, the injured victims may have legal recourse. They will likely be entitled under state law to file personal injury lawsuits against the deceased driver’s estate in a civil court setting.
