Police in Colorado Springs have arrested a woman they believe was driving drunk after a crash that injured one person, according to local sources. Colorado authorities have confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old woman under suspicion of DUI. Car accidents causing serious injury, especially when predicated on drunk driving, can result in serious criminal penalties, including loss of license and jail time.
According to the limited information available in the report, on the evening of July 9, officers in Colorado Springs observed an eastbound vehicle sideswipe at least three parked cars. They initiated a pullover, at which point the vehicle smashed into the back of a parked van. A man, who has since been identified by friends and family, was working in the back of the van at the time and was seriously hurt.
The man was rushed to a hospital suffering from multiple broken bones, including his leg, arm, several vertebrae and multiple ribs. Friends have confirmed that the man’s leg required amputation below the knee. The 30-year-old female driver responsible for the crash was arrested on the scene for DUI. It is unclear whether she remains in police custody at this time, and no court date has been announced.
The trauma of the injuries suffered by the victim in this accident cannot be overstated. Car accidents resulting in this catastrophic level of injury are taken very seriously by Colorado courts, and it seems likely the woman will face severe consequences for her role in the crash. Separately, the man is entitled under state law to sue for personal injury. Given the extent of his injuries, any damages awarded will be invaluable in his rehabilitation and ongoing care.
