Car accidents: Driver arrested in suspected hit-and-run

Patricia M. Jarzobski

A cyclist was killed on Independence Day and local police have arrested a suspect believed to have been involved in the hit-and-run accident. Car accidents of this type are carefully investigated by Colorado authorities, and if the driver is found to have broken the law in regard to the accident, he could face jail time. However, the investigation is still underway as of this report.

According to the available information, around 6:30 a.m. on July 4, a man was riding his bicycle when he was apparently struck by a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old man. The driver then reportedly fled the scene. First responders transported the cyclist to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police put out a warrant for the arrest of the driver who fled the scene. He was later found and arrested in Nebraska, and was returned to Colorado on July 16 in advance of a trial date. It is not clear from the report the specific charges he will face, but the district attorney has clarified that he could face between 4 and 12 years in prison if he is found guilty.

Car accidents that claim lives are always tragic, but this is doubly so when the accident is classified as a hit-and-run. The man will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of Colorado law and may be incarcerated if he is found to be responsible for this accident. Separately, the family of the deceased cyclist may also choose to pursue a civil lawsuit for wrongful death, which may result in damages being awarded to the family for their terrible loss.
