Police are still investigating an accident that very nearly claimed multiple lives, including several children. The Colorado State Patrol responded to the two-vehicle accident on the afternoon of June 7 in Pueblo County. As with many tragic car accidents, drunk driving is a suspected factor in the crash.
According to authorities, a 38-year-old woman was headed west on Highway 50 when she attempted to pass multiple other vehicles on the right side of the road at an unsafe speed. She lost control of the vehicle and struck an SUV pulling a camper-trailer. Her vehicle went off the side of the road, ejecting her from her vehicle and causing moderate injuries. She is not believed to have been wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the SUV, a 35-year-old man, was seriously hurt and is in stable condition at a local hospital. An adult female passenger had to be treated for moderate injuries, while three children aged 8 to 14 also suffered injuries. The youngest child was in serious condition as of this report. Police have charged the 38-year-old woman with DUI and vehicular assault, as well as reckless driving.
Car accidents are not always preventable, but the choice to drive intoxicated certainly is. In this case, the accused woman could lose her license and face serious jail time. Even if she is not convicted, Colorado law allows the family she struck to sue her in civil court for personal injury. If sufficient evidence is provided to the court, a ruling could be made in favor of the family, awarding financial compensation for their injuries.
