Police have arrested one person in connection with a serious accident in El Paso County the morning of May 19. Officers in Colorado Springs responded to the accident, which sent two people to the hospital. As with most car accidents of this type, the crash is still under investigation, and charges have been filed against one of the drivers involved.
Little information is currently available about the crash, but it has been confirmed that a Colorado Springs officer conducting traffic was witness to the accident. Two vehicles were involved, one of which fled the scene after the impact. The other vehicle was carrying two individuals, both of whom were injured in the accident.
The extent of their injuries is not currently known, but both individuals, who have not been named publicly by police, were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The other driver was later apprehended by police and charged with DUI, fleeing the scene of an accident, and several other charges. No court date has been issued for this driver, who has not been identified publicly by police.
Of course, car accidents caused by drunk driving are taken very seriously by Colorado authorities, and it is likely, if the man is found guilty of this charge, he could face serious repercussions, including the loss of his license and jail time. Separately, the injured parties are entitled to file personal injury suits against the driver in a civil court. While a criminal conviction is not a necessary component to a winning civil suit, any evidence gleaned from the criminal case that can help to prove the driver’s material contribution to the complainants’ injuries can be used to support the civil case.
