Thanksgiving burglary ends with car accident leaving 2 dead

On Behalf of | Dec 5, 2018 | Car Accidents

When most people wake on Thanksgiving morning and thoughts begin to swirl in their minds about their plans for the day, those plans usually include things like eating too much turkey, watching the parade, rooting for their favorite football team and maybe even heading out into the craziness of the Black Friday madness. One Colorado man had a much different plan for Thanksgiving that, according to the police, included starting off the morning by burglarizing a pawn shop. Unfortunately, that early morning decision initiated a string of events that resulted in a car accident that took the lives of two people.

In the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, a 19-year-old man driving a stolen truck broke into a Colorado pawn shop and stole two assault rifles. Later that morning, police received a tip about firearms in a suspicious vehicle. As the officers approached the truck, the driver sped away, but the officers did not chase the vehicle. Soon, however, they were notified that it was involved in a multi-car crash. That gruesome crash took the lives of a 55-year-old man and his 38-year-old daughter, who were killed immediately.

Police arrested the 19-year-old man at the scene. He is no stranger to the legal system as he already had outstanding warrants for vehicle theft and has open cases for a variety of offenses, including stalking, burglary and other motor vehicle theft. For the Thanksgiving morning incident, he was charged with first-degree murder with extreme indifference, felony first-degree murder, criminal attempt to commit first degree murder, vehicular eluding, leaving the scene of an accident, second-degree burglary and aggravated motor vehicle theft.

Since the truck the man was driving was stolen, the owner’s automobile insurance policy will not likely cover the accident. The family of the car accident victims may be able to receive compensation through their own own automobile insurance company if they have uninsured motorist coverage. Anyone in a car accident, especially one with serious injury, should enlist the services of a knowledgeable attorney. An experienced attorney can protect the victims’ interests, investigate all potential sources for the recovery of damages and pursue recovery of the maximum coverage under any applicable insurance policy.
