Impairment leads to holiday car accidents

On Behalf of | Dec 26, 2018 | Car Accidents

The holidays are a time of celebration in Colorado. Office Christmas parties, family get-togethers and community social events flood the calendar. Often these events involve alcohol either in the form of wine, beer or even the ever-festive eggnog. The problem arises when the social alcohol consumption leads to partygoers driving home under the influence. It may not be the first thing to come to mind when thinking about the holiday season, but the number of impairment-related car accidents is very high around the holidays.

One car accident on Christmas Eve appears to fall into the category of an impairment-related holiday crash. The crash occurred on Interstate 70 just west of Denver. State police responded to the scene of the two vehicle accident just before 8:30 that evening.

The driver of a vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 appears to have lost control and entered the median. The car continued across the median and into oncoming traffic. It crashed head-on into a vehicle traveling westbound.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 62-year-old woman, was killed in the crash. The driver of the second vehicle was a 38-year-old woman, and she also lost her life in the accident. A passenger in her vehicle, a 6-year-old little girl, was transported to a children’s hospital in critical condition. The 62-year-old is suspected of being under the influence, although it is not determined if her impairment was caused by alcohol or marijuana.

Fatal car accidents are tragic any time, but they seem even more so when they occur around the holidays. The surviving family members are left to cope with their loss at what should be one of the happiest times of the year. When they are ready, they can enlist the help of a Colorado personal injury attorney to file a wrongful death claim against the person deemed responsible for the crash. If the little girl survives, a personal injury claim can be filed on her behalf to help cover the medical care and damages she has suffered as well.
