Car accidents: Teen driver kills 1 in suspected DUI crash

Patricia M. Jarzobski

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on a recent Saturday night. Many lives are lost in drunk driving car accidents, and authorities suspect this might be one of those. They say both drivers wore their seat belts, but impairment is being looked at as a possible factor in this crash.

A preliminary accident report indicates that a collision happened shortly after 10:40 p.m. near Sterling on Highway 6. Reportedly, a 16-year-old male from Sterling was heading west in the eastbound lanes of the highway. A 52-year-old woman, also a Sterling resident, was traveling east at that time, and she collided head-on with the wrong-way driver's vehicle.

Authorities say the woman succumbed to her injuries at the crash scene. Paramedics rushed the wrong-way driver to a regional medical center. His injuries were reported to be serious. Investigators will attempt to figure out why he was traveling in the wrong direction on eastbound Highway 6.

Regardless of the outcome of an investigation to determine whether the other driver was impaired, families who have lost loved ones in similar car accidents may have grounds to pursue financial relief through the Colorado civil justice system. An experienced wrongful death attorney can provide the necessary support and guidance throughout the legal proceedings. He or she can help to establish negligence with appropriate proof -- which is the basis of any wrongful death lawsuit. The lawyer can then make sure all financial and emotional losses are documented for adjudication by the court once liability is formally established.
