Car accidents: 1 dead in Colorado

Patricia M. Jarzobski

A tragic two-car crash claimed the life of a child on the afternoon of Aug. 10, according to local sources. Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash that also injured two other people. As with most car accidents, information is still being gathered, and until the investigation is complete, no criminal charges are likely to be filed.

Very few details have been released to the public about the nature of this accident. However, it has been confirmed that an eastbound vehicle on Interstate 70 just west of Denver apparently crossed the center line into westbound traffic. This caused the vehicle to be struck by a westbound pickup truck. Based on photos taken at the crash site, the force of the impact appears to have torn the back half of the passenger car completely off. The damage to the pickup truck was not recorded.

One child, whose age and identity have not been released at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear whether the child was riding in the passenger car or the pickup truck. Two other individuals also suffered injuries of an unknown severity. Police have yet to determine what caused the passenger car to enter the oncoming lane, and the conditions of the two drivers are unknown as well. The investigation is continuing as of this report, with CSP closing the westbound lanes to facilitate accident reconstruction.

Fatal car accidents, especially those involving child fatalities, are unspeakably tragic. This is why Colorado authorities will work hard to determine whether the driver of the passenger car was at fault for causing the accident due to negligence, recklessness or intoxication. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, one or more parties may be entitled to file personal injury and/or wrongful death suits against the driver or drivers police deem to be materially responsible for the crash.
