Police are still looking into a serious car accident that happened just outside Canon City the night of April 13. Colorado State Patrol responded to the wrong-way crash, which claimed the life of one person. As with most fatal car accidents, an in-depth investigation is still underway.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, around 9:30 p.m. a vehicle was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Highway 50. It is unclear why the driver was headed the wrong way. The details of how the crash happened were omitted from the report, but it has been confirmed that three cars were involved in the accident.
Three people were hurt, though no information is available about their conditions at this time, nor is it clear whether the wrong-way driver was among them. A 24-year-old female passenger in one of the vehicles, who was apparently not wearing a seat belt at the time of the impact, was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Wrong-way car accidents can be caused by anything from simple human error to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Colorado law enforcement will determine why the offending vehicle was traveling the wrong way, and may file criminal charges against the driver if this is deemed appropriate. Regardless of whether criminal charges are filed, the injured parties as well as the family of the deceased woman are entitled under state law to file civil lawsuits for personal injury and wrongful death, respectively, against the driver of the wrong-way car.
