A single-vehicle crash resulted in tragedy on the night of Jan. 13, according to local police. Colorado police responded to the car accident that claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl and sent three others to a local hospital. As with most fatal car accidents, the investigation into this tragic crash is still underway at this time.
According to the police report, around 10 p.m. on the night in question, an SUV carrying four teenagers was traveling in Colorado Springs when the driver seemed to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV rolled onto its roof, ejecting two of the four occupants. It is unclear whether anyone in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
Of the two ejected occupants, a 13-year-old girl was pronounced dead some time later. The other three occupants were taken to local hospitals for treatment, though the severity of their injuries was not included in the report. Police say they do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, but their investigation will continue until they determine the cause of the crash.
Sometimes, car accidents happen with no fault ascribed to any driver. However, in this case, it remains likely the driver will be found materially responsible for the crash, possibly due to recklessness or negligence. Even if no criminal charges are filed, the families of the injured and the deceased may be entitled to file personal injury and/or wrongful death suits against the driver, and anyone with ownership interest in the vehicle. If the driver perished in the accident, the suit would be filed against the driver’s family and/or estate.
