One person is dead following a pedestrian-level car accident in Boulder County. Colorado authorities responsible for investigating car accidents are still trying to piece together the facts of this case. So far, no one has been charged, and Colorado State Police have said it is still too early in their investigation to determine whether charges will be filed at a later time.
According to the early accident reports, an unidentified pedestrian was crossing a road around 9:45 the night of Nov. 4. For reasons that have not yet been determined, a car struck the individual with enough force to kill that person. It is unclear whether they were declared dead at the scene or later at a hospital.
The driver stayed at the scene and called 911 to alert authorities of the accident. Police closed both directions of US 36 to facilitate their investigation, which is still underway. The driver involved in the crash is not believed to have been detained by police, but will likely be contacted again as part of the ongoing investigation.
Too few details are available about this case to determine its outcome, but as with most car accidents, Colorado authorities will scrutinize evidence found at the scene to help determine what happened. In this case, if it is found that the driver of the car was negligent or reckless in his operation of his vehicle, thus materially contributing to the crash, he could face criminal charges. Even if no such charges are filed, the family of the deceased pedestrian is entitled under state law to pursue a wrongful death suit in civil court.
