Local police were on the scene of a serious accident that claimed one life on the evening of Nov. 10, according to sources. Colorado Springs police responsible for handling car accidents are still in the process of investigating the two-car accident that killed a driver and injured two other people. As the driver believed responsible for the accident was killed, no charges are likely to be forthcoming.
According to the accident report, a vehicle driven by an unknown person was traveling eastbound on Platte Avenue when, for reasons unknown, the driver moved the vehicle into the westbound lanes. This caused the car to crash headlong into a westbound vehicle carrying one driver and one passenger. None of these individuals have been publicly identified by police at this time.
The driver and passenger in the westbound vehicle were rushed to a local hospital with injuries described as severe but not life-threatening. The eastbound driver was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. While police are still unsure what caused the driver to change lanes into oncoming traffic, they have not ruled out negligence, recklessness and/or intoxication as possible contributing factors.
Colorado authorities do not file criminal charges against the deceased, so no criminal charges are likely in this case. However, as with most car accidents, state law allows the injured parties to file personal injury lawsuits against the driver’s estate and anyone else with ownership interest in the vehicle involved. Such suits are filed in civil court and require evidence of material contribution to the accident on the part of the driver.
