Police are still collecting evidence in the tragic case of a single-car crash that led to a fatality in Colorado Springs. Colorado authorities say the cause of the accident has yet to be determined, but as with most car accidents, the investigation will continue until a cause has been found. The driver, in the meantime, is reportedly facing charges.
Details about the crash are still incomplete, but it has been confirmed that a single vehicle crashed early on the morning of Aug. 31. Two people were inside the vehicle when it crashed for reasons that have yet to be determined. The driver survived, but the passenger was pronounced dead. It is unclear whether the passenger was taken to a hospital or whether he/she died on the scene.
The driver, who was also taken to hospital with injuries, is now facing charges that have not been made public at this time. However, police have said they believe speed and/or drugs may have been catalyzing elements of this accident. So far, no court date for the driver has been announced.
In car accidents where a fatality takes place, Colorado authorities tend to investigate extremely thoroughly. In this case, it will fall to the prosecution to prove the driver was on drugs and/or speeding when the accident occurred, thus proving material contribution to the accident. Even if no criminal charges are filed, or no convictions won, the family of the deceased passenger are still entitled to file a wrongful death suit against the driver in civil court, using the aforementioned evidence to bolster their claim.
