Car accidents: Colorado accident kills 1

Patricia M. Jarzobski

A serious accident in Boulder has led to at least one death, according to local authorities. Colorado State Patrol, which typically responds to car accidents on major highways, was on the scene of this crash, which took place the afternoon of Sept. 18. Police say they have not filed charges against any of the four drivers involved in the accident at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

According to the limited accident report made available by police, the accident occurred on Highway 93 near the Flatirons Vista Trailhead. Around 4:13 p.m. four vehicles became involved in a crash that set a nearby grass field on fire. It is not known at this time which of the vehicles caught fire, leading to the subsequent grass fire.

One individual was declared dead at the scene; this individual has not been publicly identified by police pending notification of next-of-kin. It is unknown at this time whether any additional people were killed or injured, but Boulder County Sheriff's Office officials are continuing their investigation while the highway remains closed. Police still do not know the circumstances that led to the accident.

Car accidents of this type, where an immediate cause of the crash is not available, often require additional investigation from specialized accident reconstruction teams. Once these teams conduct their investigation, it is hoped that Colorado authorities will have enough information to go on to file charges against the driver or drivers believed to be criminally responsible for the accident. Separately, the surviving family of the deceased individual as well as any other injured parties are entitled under state law to file wrongful death and/or personal injury lawsuits, as appropriate, in civil court against the driver or drivers deemed responsible.
