There is a responsibility of all drivers to be alert to present and potential dangers on the road. Ignoring signs of a roadway hazard can result in serious car accidents. Whether those car accidents happen because of an act of nature, another accident or impaired driving, the person deemed to be at fault can face considerable consequences. Colorado State Patrol troopers are continuing to investigate an accident that killed one man.
Several vehicles were stopped on Interstate 76 as crews were attempting to clean a fly ash spill that had occurred earlier. A man driving a pickup truck came upon the scene but did not stop in time. He crashed into the rear end of a full-size SUV, causing that vehicle to hit the mid-size SUV in front of it.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured, nor was the passenger in the front vehicle, a young child. The driver of the front SUV had minor injuries, but she did not require treatment other than what the emergency vehicles on the scene provided. The occupants of middle vehicle suffered the most damage, and all were transported to a medical facility nearly 20 miles away. The driver only had minor injuries, two passengers were more seriously hurt and the third passenger died en route to the hospital. Two dogs riding in a crate in the vehicle were also killed.
In car accidents where a person was killed, the surviving family members may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit. This type of personal injury claim can be filed against someone who causes a fatal accident because they were negligent.
