Car accidents often the result of drinking and driving

On Behalf of | Jul 27, 2017 | Car Accidents

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol can have serious consequences, often resulting in car accidents. DUI car accidents can lead to jail time, heavy fines or lawsuits, or even permanent physical injury. Some Colorado parents are questioning why a repeat DUI offender has been allowed to continue to drive after causing an accident that put their 12-year-old daughter in ICU for four days.

The girl was walking with a friend in the middle of the afternoon when the 33-year-old driver hit her and fled the scene. She required emergency surgery for her injuries, and the driver spent one night in jail for suspicion of drunk driving. His record shows he has two more arrests, the second just one month prior to this incident, and both for the same infraction.

The state laws say that three DUI arrests are a misdemeanor, and it would take one more to classify as a felony. A sheriff’s department spokesperson attempted to answer the questioning parents by stating that an added violation, such as driving with a suspended or revoked license, could possibly get the driver off the street but that each case is different. The driver recently made a brief court appearance and is expected to return to court in the next month.

Car accidents caused by any type of negligence can, as in this case, cause injuries that may lead to extensive medical and rehabilitation bills. Those who do not get paid if they do not work may go months without a paycheck. If awarded, a financial settlement from a personal injury lawsuit may be enough to cover all costs. An experienced Colorado attorney can give the advice needed when filing this type of lawsuit.
