The number of deaths caused by vehicles both large and small increases every day. Car accidents involving pickup trucks and SUVs have the potential to cause more damage because of the mass of the vehicle. A nine-year-old girl recently died as a result of one of the first fatal car accidents in Colorado Springs in the new year.
The young girl and another female pedestrian were crossing the street when a pickup truck hit them. The pickup truck was making a right-hand turn at the intersection, and the two females were in the street’s crosswalk when they were struck. The injuries to the nine-year-old were serious enough to cause her death. Her companion was seriously injured, but there was no other information given on her condition.
Police have charged the driver of the pickup truck, a 45-year-old male, with careless driving causing death and causing bodily injury, as well as other violations. A report did not state whether he was injured, but police do not believe he had been drinking before the accident occurred. They also thought the man’s speed as he was making the turn was not a factor in the incident.
Drivers whose negligent actions result in the death of others may not only be facing traffic violations, jail time and high fines, but also a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of the deceased.
