Man sentenced after intentional car accidents

On Behalf of | Dec 7, 2016 | Car Accidents

There have been many campaigns over the years urging people to not drive after they have been drinking or taking drugs. Too many car accidents have been caused by those with altered mind states and reflexes after alcohol and drug consumption. One of those car accidents recently resulted in a 13-year prison sentence for a Colorado man.

Just over a year ago the 52-year-old man tried to kill his girlfriend, the sole passenger in his car, by unfastening her seatbelt and hitting the gas, crashing his car into a traffic pole. It was the second time in a week he had made the attempt. He reportedly admitted to emergency responders he had been trying to kill her. He lay unconscious in the ICU for over a week after the crash, but his girlfriend’s injuries were minor. He says he has no memory of what happened around the time of the accident.

Although he was high at the time of the crash, the district attorney emphasized to the court the act was premeditated, based on his earlier attempt. There had also been several previous reports of domestic violence between the two before the crash. Because the man had entered a guilty plea to vehicular assault a couple of months before the sentencing, an attempted murder charge against him was dropped.

The aftermaths of car accidents involve more than just a wrecked car. Medical bills from injuries, missed paychecks from time off work and dealing with insurance companies can all be overwhelming difficulties too taxing to handle alone. The aid of a seasoned attorney who has a thorough knowledge of personal injury law in Colorado is invaluable at such a time.
