Car accidents can bring serious consequences

On Behalf of | Jul 6, 2016 | Car Accidents

The consequences of a person’s actions seldom end with that person. Sometimes they can be felt for many years after the initial action. The results of car accidents often fall in that category, especially if the accident ends in severe injury or death. When car accidents are that serious, the person found to be responsible may face charges that could lead to imprisonment or lawsuits from the victims or victims’ families. One man recently received sentencing after he pleaded guilty in the death of a Colorado state trooper.

The 33-year-old female trooper was killed as she was examining the scene of another crash. The man, 52 years of age and retired with the rank of colonel from the Army, had been drinking at a football game and kept going after the trooper was hit. Official reports stated his blood alcohol level after over two hours following the incident was nearly twice the legal limit.

His guilty plea was for the charges of vehicular homicide as well as tampering with evidence, as he emptied his cooler before police caught up with him. He was handed an eight year prison sentence after his plea on two of the five charges against him. His prison term will be followed by five years of parole. A spokesperson for the state patrol’s office stated that three cadets resigned from the academy as well as a number of cases in which the trooper was to be the main witness were dismissed as a result of her death.

A report on this case did not mention if the trooper’s husband planned to seek financial compensation for the death of his wife, but he would be well within his rights to do so. Many family members who have lost loved ones in car accidents have chosen to seek legal advice in cases that have ended like this one. Should a Colorado resident have a requirement for legal action, there are professionals available to guide him or her through the necessary process.
