Careless actions often lead to car accidents in Colorado

On Behalf of | May 20, 2016 | Car Accidents

Even when just goofing off, teenagers have to be cautious with motor vehicles. Many teens do not have much experience when it comes to getting behind the wheel, and serious car accidents often take place due to negligent or reckless driving. One Colorado teen is facing charges after his friend was killed in an accident.

The incident involved what seems to have been intended as vehicle horseplay in a department store parking lot.  The now deceased friend, a senior in high school, was reportedly sitting on the hood of the vehicle. The 17-year-old driver apparently accelerated and pulled out of the parking spot.

The friend fell off the car. Sadly, he died eight days later due to the severity of his injuries. The teen who was driving at the time has since been charged with careless driving resulting in death. It appears that prosecutors plan to request that the young man be mandated to enter a diversion program as part of the repercussions for his alleged role in his friend’s death. This means he would be required to travel to various communities, speaking to students and others about the tragedy in an effort to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future by raising awareness to the dangers that accompany careless driving.

In many cases where car accidents result in death, immediate family members of a deceased victim choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit to seek compensation for damages and pursue justice on behalf of their loved one. Such legal actions typically include time limitations regarding the span of time between the accident date to the date a claim is filed. Residents in Colorado who are considering this type of litigation do well to clarify state laws by consulting with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible after a collision.
