Drunk driving can lead to tragic car accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 23, 2016 | Car Accidents

The cause of some car accidents can be traced back to an overindulgence of alcohol or drugs and then getting behind the wheel. Too much of either substance can affect judgment, vision acuity and other abilities that may lead to car accidents. According to police, too much alcohol allegedly consumed by an 18-year-old University of Colorado college student resulted in the death of a 65-year-old woman.

The police report stated the young man attempted to make a U-turn while driving home around 3 a.m. When police arrived on the scene, they say they found the man smelling of alcohol and with bloodshot eyes. Reportedly, he initially told them he was the one who had been hit and that he did not think he had been drinking at any time before the accident. He also did not realize the other driver had been killed and requested that police tell him what happened as they were charging him with several offenses, including vehicular homicide.

The man did not want his breath tested, but police had him perform several field sobriety movements. They also got samples of his blood for testing. The level of his blood alcohol content was not reported. Although the district attorney wanted bail set at $100,000, the judge set it for $20,000 due to the man’s young age and the fact that the charges reflected a first offense. If he is convicted, however, he could spend anywhere from four to 12 years in prison.

Car accidents similar to this one can change a person’s life forever. Any time spent in prison can derail personal plans, educational plans or future job opportunities. When dealing with criminal charges in the aftermath of a Colorado accident, it may be prudent to speak to a professional in order to prepare a focused and meaningful defense for the coming court proceedings.
