There are several reasons car accidents occur in the state of Colorado. Weather, especially in the winter months, and vehicle malfunction are two leading causes. However, possibly the main cause of car accidents is human operator error. A recent accident involved a college student and resulted in significant injury.
After leaving the Winter X Games, the 20-year-old student was headed northwest at the time of the wreck. He later admitted to troopers that he could not maintain control of his car because he was driving faster than the posted speed limit. When he crossed over into oncoming traffic, he hit another car head on. His admission to the troopers also included the fact that he had been drinking alcohol and smoking pot several hours earlier.
Injuries to the other driver included broken bones, a collapsed lung and damage to the spine. She will require several surgeries to repair her wounds. After troopers found broken beer bottles, drugs and drug paraphernalia in the student’s car and after his breath alcohol content registered over the legal limit of .08, he was charged with vehicular assault while under the influence and other impairment-related charges. He was taken to a local jail but posted bail the next day and was released.
People who cause car accidents, especially when driving impaired, are held accountable for their actions. The penalties for their carelessness can range in severity. In this case, the injured driver may file suit against the young man seeking enough financial compensation to pay for all her medical bills as well as replenish wages lost due to hospitalization and rehabilitation.
