Colorado takes steps to deal with number of motorcycle accidents

On Behalf of | Aug 12, 2015 | Motorcycle Accidents

Statistics by the Colorado Department of Transportation confirm that motorcycle accidents occur quite frequently in the state. In fact, two recent motorcycle accidents resulting in death on successive days. Both accidents were on highly traveled roadways.

While there are far fewer motorcycles than passenger cars on the road, bikers account for close to 20 percent of all fatalities that occur among all types of vehicles. The number of deadly crashes in the state involving motorcycles just this year has risen to over 45 after the two recent fatalities. In both of those accidents, the vehicle occupants did not suffer any injuries. It is estimated that a fatality will occur in a motorcycle accident 26 times more often than in a car accident.

To help these numbers decrease, the Department of Transportation has employed an advertising campaign targeting all drivers on the road to be aware of motorcycles, especially during the warmer summer months. The department is using the Internet radio site, Pandora, and videos to spread the message. For passenger vehicle drivers, DOT asks that motorcycles be given some extra space. For motorcycle riders, it is suggested they attend a training course on staying alert in traffic.

Colorado residents who have lost a loved one or who have themselves been injured in one of the many motorcycle accidents blamed on the negligence of another driver may pursue claims for financial compensation to cover costs associated with the accident. Medical bills, funeral expenses and reparations for emotional turmoil can all be included in a monetary judgment awarded after proof of negligence has been properly established. Because each case is unique, finding an experienced professional to support efforts to gain compensation will be necessary.
