National campaign to target distracted driving

Distracted driving, as we’ve previously mentioned on this blog, is a serious problem all states are currently dealing with in one way or another. Various approaches to the problem are being tried, including criminal penalties, increased law enforcement and public service campaigns. Readers may know that the Colorado State Patrol worked a campaign just last month to target distracted drivers. The comical slogan used for the effort was “Get your head out of your apps.”

Over the next few days, law enforcement officials across the country will be ramping up efforts to track down distracted drivers, particularly those who are breaking cell phone and texting laws. The slogan of the enforcement effort is: “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” Hopefully the campaign will bring greater awareness to a serious safety issue.

According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, Here in Colorado, all drivers are prohibited from texting, though there is no general hand-held ban. Novice drivers and school bus drivers are not allowed to use cell phones in any form. In implementing increased enforcement efforts, officers will be looking out for drivers who skirt these rules.

Those who are harmed by distracted driving should know that they have the right to be compensated for injuries and other losses caused by another driver. Even in cases where a driver is not in violation of state laws, he or she still has the obligation to operate his or vehicle in a reasonably safe manner. Any form of distraction can be an occasion for an accident, and drivers do well to keep this in mind.
