Although marijuana may be legal in Colorado, it may still be dangerous to get behind the wheel after smoking it. A representative for Smart Colorado stated that many people who had not experienced marijuana are now experimenting, which can be very dangerous. A recent car accident is another example of victims being seriously injured due to a driver being under the influence of marijuana.
On a recent evening, a few hours after midnight, a female driver allegedly drove through a red light. According to the charges against her, after she went through the light, she crashed into another vehicle. Local authorities claim that she was driving 30 mph over the speed limit.
There were six people injured as a result of the crash. As of the most recent report, one of the victims still remains at the hospital. In the driver’s affidavit, she said that she smoked a bowl of marijuana and drank a beer before she got behind the wheel. After her arrest, she was released on a $50,000 bond until her scheduled court appearance.
The 22-year-old driver was charged by the Denver District Attorney with driving while under the influence of marijuana, four counts of third-degree assault and two counts of vehicular assault. Any of the injured victims involved in this car accident may choose to file a claim against the party deemed responsible. The victims may seek to be awarded reimbursement for their incurred medical bills as well as any other applicable damages. In an attempt to prevent further accidents in the future, Colorado researchers are currently collecting information to provide marijuana usage guidelines.
