Did age, driver fatigue cause fatal Colorado accident?

On Behalf of | Jan 30, 2014 | Car Accidents

There is a lot of argument about placing age limitations on drivers in the state of Colorado. For example, many people question whether age may contribute to problems such as driver fatigue, poor reaction time and the ability to see various obstacles along the road. Still, situations vary from person to person. Some individuals are quite capable drivers at the age of 90, whereas other drivers suffer from different problems at the age of 70.

Recently, an 83-year-old man was involved in a serious car accident that resulted in the death of a sheriff’s deputy. The accident took place on a recent Sunday morning while the deputy was driving along Highway 93. The man was riding his department-issued motorcycle while conducting his usual Sunday morning patrols.

Tragically, while the deputy was negotiating a curve, the 83-year-old man crossed the highway’s double-yellow line in order to pass another vehicle. The SUV smashed head-on into the deputy’s motorcycle. The deputy was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

Currently, investigators do not believe that alcohol or any other factors, such as the weather, may have contributed to the crash. Nevertheless, some suggest that the driver’s age of 83 may be a factor in the crash. Indeed, in some cases in Colorado, age has increased driver fatigue or caused other problems that have led to automobile accidents. Still, regardless of how this accident happened, the elderly man who apparently caused the accident by crossing the double-yellow line could face criminal charges and a wrongful death civil lawsuit relating to the victim’s tragic death in this incident.
