It is easy for Colorado drivers to forget that they share the road, not only with other drivers but with motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians as well. While automotive travel certainly comprises the majority of road traffic, drivers do not enjoy special privileges when it comes to the use of the American roadways. When drivers fail to act in a responsible manner toward others on the road, tragedy can occur. A recent car accident underscores this truth, and serves as a reminder to us all to consider the safety of others while driving.
The accident took place on a recent Saturday afternoon in Loveland, Colorado. A cyclist was traveling northbound on Monroe Avenue when a sport utility vehicle approached the intersection with 37th Street. As the SUV attempted to turn onto 37th, the driver struck the cyclist. The bicyclist suffered serious injuries in the collision, including multiple broken ribs, a concussion and a fractured left ankle.
He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, and remains hospitalized as of the time of this report. There is no word on his prognosis for recovery. The cyclist is also a Loveland city councilor, and is well-known as a pioneer in satellite imagery and geographic information systems.
As this man begins the long road to recovery from the injuries sustained during this car accident, he may face a number of challenges. In many cases, the full extent of the physical ramifications of a car accident is unknown for months or even years after the incident. Authorities report that the driver who struck the cyclist will face a misdemeanor charge of careless driving resulting in an injury. In addition, the driver could also face a personal injury lawsuit in the matter. Such an action could help the Colorado cyclist recover damages associated with the crash, including medical costs, property damage and loss of income.
