Colorado fatal accident kills 2, injuries 3

On Behalf of | Mar 29, 2012 | Wrongful Death

Far too frequently Colorado residents understand that when drivers act with disregard for others on our roadways and highways, we all lose. This may well be the case when an automobile crash injures and kills innocent victims. Colorado State Patrol troopers are actively looking for a later-model black or burgundy sedan that was said to have been involved in a hit-and-run fatal accident that claimed the lives of two women and injured three people, including a 2-year-old.

The fatal accident occurred around 10:34 a.m. on Mar. 26 in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70, closing all westbound lanes in Frisco for many hours, and reducing the eastbound lanes to one. All five victims were traveling westbound when their 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer rolled on the highway.

According to a Colorado State Patrol Sgt., the two women were declared dead at the location of the accident. The three injured passengers included a critically injured 2-year-old, a 17-year-old boy and an adult male. All were airlifted to Summit Medical Center, with the toddler’s condition later upgraded to fair and the older boy already discharged.

Accident scene investigators believe the later-model black or burgundy sedan induced the Trailblazer to roll but may not have sustained any damaged because it may not have actually collided with the victims’ car. Unfortunately, automobile accidents caused by careless and even reckless drivers happen all too often on Colorado roads and highways. Keeping one’s eyes on the road and having situational awareness are two strategies one can employ to avoid becoming another fatal-accident statistic.

While it is too early in the investigation to conclude what happened in this fatal accident, the surviving families of the deceased victims, as well as those injured, will likely want to review and fully understand the report of the official accident investigation. Colorado wrongful death and personal injury claims provide recourse through the state court system to recover monetary damages for serious injuries, as well as for the loss of a loved one, based on negligent or reckless actions of others. In instances where a party deemed responsible for an accident is found to have acted recklessly, or even intentionally, punitive damages may also be applicable.
