Car accidents can claim lives of any age

Patricia M. Jarzobski

People who get behind the wheel of a car have a responsibility to ensure their full attention is on the road while they are driving. Any less than complete concentration by drivers can result in car accidents. Those drivers who cause car accidents often face charges, the severity of which is determined by the cause of the collision. A Colorado high school senior was killed in an accident just a month before his graduation.

The early evening crash happened when the student was on his way home after visiting with a friend. Another driver, a 52-year-old male, riding toward the boy had intentions of making a left-hand turn, but he did not wait until the boy had passed. The front of the man's vehicle crashed into the driver's side of the boy's car.

Emergency responders reported the boy died before they were able to resuscitate him once they arrived at the scene. The older man was not injured in the crash, and state troopers charged him with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. He was arrested when he was not able to show troopers proof of insurance.

The death of a loved one is difficult to handle, no matter what the cause. However, when deaths are a result of car accidents or other types of careless behavior, the surviving family members have the option of filing a wrongful death lawsuit requesting financial compensation to help in their grief. No amount of money will take the place of a missing loved one, but it can pay funeral and burial costs, any medical bill amassed before death or be put in a trust for college funds for young children left behind. An experienced Colorado attorney can explain the legalities of any action a family chooses to take.
